About the Beechcraft King Air 200 / B200

The King Air 200 and B200 are the aircraft that built the Super King Air name. Roughly 4,000 of the 200 series have been delivered since 1974, and the same airframe is still in production today as the King Air 260. Two PT6A engines, a pressurised 16 ft 8 in cabin for six to eight, and genuine short-field ability make it the default answer for regional flying into airports a jet cannot use.

Who charters it

The cheapest credible way to move six people in a pressurised twin-engine cabin, and the right recommendation when the destination runway rules out a jet. Runway numbers matter here and are published on three different bases, so state which one you mean: about 2,579 ft of ground roll at max weight, about 3,300 ft to clear a 50 ft obstacle, and about 5,300 ft balanced field. Many Part 135 operators plan to the balanced field number, so a 3,500 ft strip is not automatically available at full weight. Where it is the wrong aircraft: range with people aboard is roughly 1,000 to 1,100 nm rather than the 1,580 nm often quoted, nobody stands up in a 57 in cabin, and at 290 ktas anything past about 700 nm feels long next to a light jet. Colorado mountain airports: strong

A 200-series King Air, so the mountain-west case is the familiar one: twin PT6A redundancy through box-canyon terrain, and runway length that is rarely the limiter at ASE or EGE. Two honest caveats against the King Air 260. The B200's PT6A-42 does not hold power hot and high as well as the 260's PT6A-52, so summer density altitude eats useful load faster on this aircraft than on the current model. And the runway figures are published on three bases that differ by more than 2,700 ft: about 2,579 ft ground roll, about 3,300 ft over a 50 ft obstacle, and about 5,300 ft balanced field at max weight. Many Part 135 operators plan to the balanced-field number, so a short mountain strip is not automatically available at full load. Confirm against the AFM and the operator, and note that Raisbeck or Blackhawk modified aircraft perform materially better than a stock airframe.
